Early Detection of Breast Cancer: Key Signs to Watch for at Home

We All Are Aware How Widely Breast Cancer is Spreading

Medical science tells us that the earlier detection, the better our chances to survive cancer are. Most women fail to go for a regular checkup. Let me tell you that signs of breast cancer could be checked at home by your own self. Yes, you need to keep a close eye on some base signs which can raise an alarm of early detection of cancer.

Simple Signs of Breast Cancer

  1. First Appearance of the Breast
There is a visible change. If you have breast cancer, stand in front of the mirror to inspect your breast thoroughly. Check for physical signs like your breast skin, which will appear dimpled, looking like an orange peel or redness of the skin, or if your skin is bruised. Even the size of the breast would change.

  2. How You Feel the Breast
If cancer is present, there is a possibility that you might feel your breast slightly differently. You might feel heaviness and tenderness in your breast. If by mistake you touch the breast, you immediately feel the pain or sensitivity. There could be a burning sensation, or you might feel that your breasts are swollen and you are uncomfortable.

  3. Change in Nipple
When you observe the nipple, you may feel that they are either shrinking or turning inwards. There might be an unusual discharge from the nipple, and the skin of the nipple can be felt as red, dry, scaly, or thick.

  4. Effects on Lymph Nodes
Lymph nodes near the breast, collar bone, and armpit are inflamed or swollen. This causes constant pain and discomfort.

  5. Check for Lump
You can check for a lump by yourself at home by following these simple steps:

    • Firstly, apply some soap or body lotion on your hand. When your hands are slippery, you can detect the lump easily.
    • Place your right hand on the hip. Slide the left hand under the right armpit and move it up and down, side to side on the surface. If there is a lump, the movement would be bumpy instead of straight.
    • Check the left side too and make the similar movements below and above the collar bone on both sides.
    • Next, lie down on your back and raise both your hands up. Using the index, middle, and ring finger, make a circular motion around the breast to find the lump.
    • Then switch arms and, with the thumb and index finger, squeeze the nipple to check if there is any discharge. Also, try to push the nipple inside. This should happen easily if there is no cancer, and if it doesn’t, it is one of the signs.

Conclusion

If any of these signs are found during the self-examination, immediately contact your doctor. We are looking forward to the early detection of cancer and survival together. We have to fight cancer, and this can only be made possible if every woman in society is well aware and well informed. Do not be afraid. Come forward, and let's fight it out.
